Dental Crowns

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are custom‑made caps that cover and protect the visible part of a damaged tooth, restoring its strength, shape and appearance.

They are often used when a tooth is cracked, heavily filled or has had root canal treatment.

Crowns are typically made from materials such as zirconia or porcelain fused to metal and are carefully colour‑matched, so they blend naturally with your smile. The process usually takes just a couple of appointments, after which your tooth is fully restored and ready to use as normal.

Dental crown treatment

Dental crown placement procedure

1

Step 1

At your first visit, we take an X‑ray of the tooth to check its health and plan your treatment. In some cases, a root canal may be needed before the crown is placed.
2

Step 2

The area is gently numbed, and the tooth is reshaped so the crown can sit securely over it.
3

Step 3

We then take a precise scan or impression of the prepared tooth and send this to our dental laboratory, where your custom crown is crafted. A temporary crown can be fitted to protect the tooth and keep your smile looking complete while the final crown is made.
4

Step 4

At your follow‑up visit, the temporary crown is removed, and the new crown is tried in. Once you and your dentist are happy with the fit, shape and colour, the crown is permanently cemented in place.

Dental crown aftercare

Teeth with crowns do not need special cleaning routines, but the tooth and gums around them still need everyday care. Brush twice a day, clean between your teeth and attend regular check‑ups so plaque does not build up under the edges of the crown.

Good hygiene helps prevent decay and gum problems around the crowned tooth, keeping your restoration comfortable and lasting for longer.
