Extractions

What is a tooth extraction?

Tooth extraction (also known as tooth removal or pulling) is a surgical dental procedure during which a tooth is removed. There are many reasons as to why a dental extraction can be needed, however, primarily it is used when a tooth cannot be salvaged and to prepare for more complex and long lasting dental procedures.

A practical guide and frequently asked questions

Is tooth extraction painful?

You may feel some pressure, but the area is fully numbed with local anaesthetic so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Your clinician will check in with you throughout to keep you comfortable.

What types of extractions do you offer?

At Dental Art we carry out a wide range of extractions, including wisdom teeth (simple and impacted), molar extractions, implant removals and other surgical or routine tooth removals.

What should you do after a tooth extraction?

In most cases, dentures can be fitted around 8 weeks after tooth removal, once your gums have healed.

  • Avoid drinking through a straw for the first 24 hours
  • Keep the area clean but do not brush directly over the socket
  • Follow the eating and drinking advice given by your dentist
  • Avoid smoking or vaping while the area heals
  • If you need to rinse, do so very gently with the recommended solution
  • Follow any additional instructions provided by your clinical team.
Are there any side effects to tooth extraction?

Most patients heal without any complications apart from some temporary soreness around the area. Very rarely, issues such as damage to a neighbouring tooth, increased sensitivity, delayed healing (dry socket) or nerve irritation can occur, and your dentist will explain these risks before treatment.

Do you provide teeth extractions under the NHS?

No. Dental Art is a private clinic, so we do not offer NHS treatment. Being seen privately means shorter waiting times and more time dedicated to each appointment and treatment plan.
