Dental Hygiene Treatment

Why is it important to see a dental hygienist?

Brushing, flossing and mouthwash are a good start, but they can’t remove all the plaque and tartar that build up over time. Regular check‑ups and hygiene appointments keep your gums healthy and help prevent problems before they become uncomfortable or complex.

This matters even more if you have had treatments such as dental implants, where clean, healthy gums are essential for long‑term success. We generally recommend a hygiene visit at least twice a year, or more often if your dentist advises it.

What is the length of a hygiene appointment?

Most hygiene appointments take around 30–45 minutes, depending on the type of clean you need and how much build‑up there is. We will confirm the exact length when you book.

What hygiene treatment options do you offer?

We provide a range of hygiene treatments, from standard cleans to more advanced options that use additional tools to remove deeper staining and deposits.

A practical guide and frequently asked questions

What is plaque?

Plaque is a soft, sticky film of bacteria that naturally builds up in the mouth over time. It tends to collect where the tooth meets the gum line and between the teeth. With a thorough brushing technique and regular use of interdental brushes or floss/tape, plaque can be gently and easily removed before it causes problems.

What is calculus (tartar)?

Calculus, or tartar, is plaque that has been left on the teeth and has hardened due to the mineral salts in your saliva. Once it forms, it cannot be removed at home and must be professionally cleaned away by our hygienist. With an effective daily brushing and interdental cleaning routine, you can greatly reduce the chance of calculus building up again.
